Livestreams Go Mainstream Now And After the Pandemic

According to a New Bandsintown Survey of Artists & Fans, Live Streams Will Remain Popular Even After Live Music Returns. Pearl Jam, Metallica and Billie Eilish Top the List of Live Streaming Artists Over the Last 12 Months

One year ago, almost a million live concerts were canceled on global live music discovery platform Bandsintown, and almost as swiftly, artists and fans embraced live streaming performances.

Since March 2020, over 22,000 artists have performed more than 79,500 concert live streams and marketed them on Bandsintown. While the industry anticipates the return of live music, a new survey of 7688 fans and artists commissioned by Bandsintown finds that music live streams will have a lasting impact:

  • 86% of fans have watched at least one music live stream during the past 12 months

  • 31% have streamed 7 or more concerts

  • 62% say they have paid to watch a live stream

  • 55% will continue to tune in for live streams after in-person concerts return (see infographic below)

On the artist side:

  • 70% of musicians have live streamed during the last 12 months

  • 41% now live stream once a month or more

  • 85% will continue to make it a permanent part of their performing plans after in-person shows return

Among the artists who have leaned into live streams since March 2020, Bandsintown also found that Pearl Jam, Metallica, and Billie Eilish were at the top of the list of live streaming artists this past year (full list below).
